Improving your money mindset

Malini DevadasBlog

If you’ve had a look around my website you might have noticed that I talk a lot about mindset, particularly money mindset. What do I mean by that? Well, your mindset is really just your attitude to things. By that logic, then, your money mindset is your attitude towards money.

Why does it matter? Because the way you think about money is reflected in your business. Here are some examples:

  • You worry that your prices are too expensive so assume that no-one will pay them and you therefore underquote.
  • You don’t want to spend any money on your business so you burn the midnight oil trying to do all the things, even when you’re not particularly good at them.
  • You use the free version of all the software because you don’t want to pay for features, even if they will make your life easier.
  • You spend more time worrying about the client’s budget rather than your own finances.
  • You routinely do extra, unpaid work on a project to keep the client happy, even if it reduces your hourly rate to a pittance.
  • You think selling is sleazy and that clients should be able to find you (and buy from you) without you needing to resort to marketing.
  • You think that editors who charge ‘a lot’ are ripping off authors.

It’s possible to change your money mindset. In fact, I would say that working on your mindset is one of the best things you can do to grow your business. I have done a lot of my own personal development in this area and it’s paid off (literally!). I’m now earning more, working less and spending my time doing things I enjoy, both work-wise and in my spare time. I feel more confident about my pricing and that confidence in myself means that clients feel more confident in me as well.

So, what can you do to improve your money mindset? Here are three things to start with:

  • Notice the thoughts you have about money, whenever the topic comes up.
  • Write down those thoughts.
  • If you find yourself having negative thoughts, try to change your script.

Being aware of the way you think can really open your eyes to the things you have been telling yourself, maybe for decades.
